The NGSS assessments at each grade include 6 item clusters (a stimulus and a series of questions, generally takes students 6-12 minutes to complete) and 12 stand-alone items (shorter, generally takes 2-3 minutes to complete). The Hawaii EOC, and Hawaii Competency Test are standards-based, criterion-referenced tests. Students compete only with themselves and are measured by how well they have mastered grade-specific Science skills. The Hawaii End-of-Grade and Hawaii End-of-Course tests are scored on four performance levels, with Level 1 being the lowest and Level 4 the highest. Students scoring at or above Level 3 are considered to be proficient. The Hawaii Test of Computer Skills and the Hawaii Competency Tests are scored on a pass-fail basis. Hawaii’s goal is for all students to pass the tests and allows tests to be retaken. A good resource on the Hawaii Testing program is the testbooks.online website. Each exam has approximately 50 questions aligned to the content standards assigned to the course. The exams are untimed and tests may be paused by either the student or the test administrator and completed at a later time within the testing window. (A student whose exam is paused for more than 20 minutes will not be allowed to review questions answered during the previous test session.) The EOC exams include multiple choice and constructed response questions that are machine-scored. When a student completes an exam, the student’s score is displayed on the monitor and access to the student’s score report is available to the student’s teacher via the same online reporting system.
